I’m often late, and I know I’m not alone in this… Why, I hear you ask? Well, I have a baby, and baby’s appear notorious for delaying their parents departures…
?They cause chaos, and missed coffee dates. This is dire news to new parents. We crave talking to other parents and coffee, even if it’s decaf. Newborns also cause lunches to end up being at 4pm, or for that matter missed lunches, dinners at 9pm, or even dinners at 3pm. You have to eat as much as possible whenever you get the chance, dinner can be anytime!
So, what can your darling newborn be doing to cause all this chaos?…
- “I need milk NOW” screams. You can’t possibly ignore these! Drop everything and get feeding!
- Poo, poo, poo. Newborn poonamis are indescribable. Huge, explosive, leaky and most definitely, are not quick to clean up. They involve full changes and sometimes baths. And, I’m not just taking about changing and bathing baby, you might need to change too.
- Then there is the time baby’s cry says “Actually, mummy, you know how you just changed my nappy? Well you need to do it again” -the blue line confirms it. Yes it was only changed 5 minutes ago, but yes, baby was very good not wee-ing all over you, them, and the changing mat as you changed them…. They waited 5 minutes so you have done your victory dance, high-fived your other half, and revelled in our success as parents. Note. This might happen more than once, or on a bad day, twice. It can also lead back to points 1 and devestatingly 2.
- 4a. Then, there is the “Oh yuck I’ve just been sick. Clean me up, mummy! Quick! And, by the way you probably need to change me too” moment. This is pretty self explanatory and often leads back to point 1, followed by 2, and on your ‘you’re actually not going out days’ point 3. Then there is also point 4b… ? ? 4b. “Oooops I was sick on you too, you should probably change” I’d like to say I would change, but no, a wet wipe usually solves that problem enough to get out the precious door…
- Baby is sleeping. Never, never, ever, ever, ever move or wake a sleeping baby. Sorry dead arms. Sorry uneaten food. Sorry hubby feeding me biscuits and holding luke warm mugs of tea to my lips. I’m not waking the teeny tiny sleepy baby in my arms. I’ll even skip my coffee with my new mummy friends (though I will spend most of the time baby sleeps, hoping she wakes in time to still get there in time knowing they will mostly all be late too).
Please let me know you can relate to this??
Lynne x
PS. I must say I wrote this a while ago, when H was still only on milk…. Now she’s 9 months, my reasons for being late are a bit different… I’ll write about that next time!
PPS. As a side matter, if you’ve got a newborn or are still pregnant, just combine those meals and eat as much as you can when you can, who knows when your next meal will be, but you can guarantee little newborn will be demanding their food as soon as your dinner is cooked!?

September 2, 2015 at 9:49 amAh yes, I remember all of these! Now I have 2 toddlers I’m generally running late because a) my son refuses to put on his pants b) my daughter decides she needs a poo just as we’re heading out the door or c) World War III has erupted because I suggested they help clean up their toys!
