Mummy needs a break, a little cup of tea,
Baby needs a nap or she’ll be grumpy,
Mummy watches like a hawk, dawn til dusk, no second to spare
Nappies, snacks, and playtime too, milk and meals to prepare
Baby’s into everything, to everything she’ll crawl
She’ll pick it up, turn it round, eat it and… bawl
I love you to the moon and back
But since seven you’ve had no nap
Mummy needs a cup of tea
A sit, a stare, a moment for me
A break, to sit, to get some energy,
Cause mummy hasn’t even stopped to pee,
Mummy just needs, a hot cup of tea?
Oh dear, 3.30 is too late, mummy’s in a state
Mummy needs a break, baby’s lasted too late,
No morning nap, no little lull,
Washing, cleaning, rubbish to cull
All these already done
Thank you jumperoo, and high chair too
Now mummy needs just a minute or or two
A cup of tea, no watching like a hawk
She’ll tidy up, find some food, find an adult to talk,
She’s had no minute to spare to think,
Baby is non-stop, mummy just needs a drink.
No second left alone, from dawn til dusk,
A non stop whirl of nappies, food and goo
Toys and music, screams and squeals, it’s a noisy little place
Baby empties every box, and loves the fireplace
Peekaboo and blocks we stack,
Now little cherub laughs at no
That cheeky grin, I’ll always know
Cute and cuddly, happy too
Until the monster strikes at two
Over six hours up and no nap yet
It’s been too long, baby’s getting upset
A walk outside, a car ride
Nothing does the trick
Baby needs a peaceful hour, just a little nap
Mummy needs a sit, a little cup of tea
Mummy cuddles and a bottle of milk
Cbeebies and a fake yawn too,
Hey, anything to encourage a nap
And suddenly, just like a tap
Without a peep,
Baby’s off to sleep
So mummy sighs
And closes her eyes
Kettle on, kitchen cleaned
Washing on, the highchair gleams
Now to sit enjoy the bliss
Not to think or run or chase
No watching like a hawk
A tweet, a talk,
An internet shop
A moment to sit to be me,
A little moment to have a tea
Now there’s the scream, off we go again
The difference is, baby’s had a nap, so happy she’ll remain
Mummy loves these days, so off she runs
Baby jumps and squeals, it’s wonderful to see
Happy baby plays til time for tea,
Then bath time, splashing, and off to bed.
Lovely dreams til morning comes.
Happy baby, happy mummy, a nap is all we need.
To summarise there are 5 reasons mummy needs baby to nap:
- Tea
- Cake
- The sofa
- To stare blindly into space
- To curl up in a ball and pray baby naps for more than half an hour… Oh yeah that doesn’t work!

November 20, 2015 at 7:47 pmWow, a really impressive poem! And all very true!! I had two terrible nap rejectors for the first seven months, then for both of them, seven months seemed to be the time they decided that yes they liked napping, and were going to do it at regular times, for long periods! It was really odd! I so know what you mean that theres just so much to do, and you just need a little time to do a chore/eat/pee!!! Really great post!

November 22, 2015 at 8:58 amNaps are great. If I am very lucky my nearly three year old will take a quick afternoon nap especially if he has been at the childminder that morning but I miss the days when it was part of the routine.

November 22, 2015 at 8:22 pmGosh I remember those days! Zach doesn’t nap now (most of the time) but he’s old enough to give whoever is looking after him, a break! It’s funny when I remember back to those baby days, he’d fall asleep in the pram and I’d get him home and sneak around reeeally quietly making a cup of tea! Thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday
