I’m not going to give my cake recipe here as it is in this cake recipe post, but once you’ve taken you cake out of the oven, leave it to cool. Then follow these super easy quick instructions to make an easy butterfly cake perfect for kids birthdays, or just a baking with kids activity in lockdown! …
HOW TO MAKE AN EASY BUTTERFLY CAKE
First, ice your cake
Mix up some buttercream icing. I generally add icing and butter until the consistency is right, it’s always just a guessing game.
For this, I used pink buttercream and purple buttercream on top to make this pink, purple butterfly cake for my daughter using her favourite colours.
It’s not neat or finished, and to be honest the purple looks a bit feeble, but you can make this with any colour you like.
Making the Butterfly
To creat the butterfly just use a cookie cutter.
Pop it on the cake and fill it with hundred and thousands (sprinkles if you’re from the USA), and bobs your uncle. One pretty much perfect butterfly.
Just pop any stray pieces back in the middle.
Pat down the sprinkles while the cutter is still in place to try to make sure they are stuck in the icing.
Oh, and don’t let your 5 year old help with this bit unless you want a LOT of sprinkles!
Finishing off
Add some other decorations, unicorn toppers, or ball decorations like we have.
Also run a knife around the edge to smooth it off.
There’s not much you can do about kiddie fingers in the buttercream icing but, they’ll be super impressed with their cake, that’s the least of their worries!
I’m thinking next time we might use flowers and a unicorn cookie cutter… result to follow next week (providing we get more self raising flour in our delivery!)
See, just like that and with no, crafty skills at all, you have a gorgeous butterfly cake. I know my kids (girls, age nearly 3 and 5) absolutely love these simple cakes.
If you like this recipe I’d love it if you could share it on social media, and Pinterest ❤️
